Winter Series 2016 Round 5 - Palm Springs Speedway Preview

With the 5th round of the 2016 Formula-SimRacing Winter Series upon us, just 1 big question remains, which driver will win it all?

Technically, due to the points system this years’ Winter Series offers, Michi Hoyer is still in with a chance of the title, but if you were a betting man, there’s only 2 people you would put your money on. Jernej Simoncic and Kuba Brzezinski. These 2 above all others have been the outstanding drivers of this years’ Winter Series, both consistent, and both have been able to overcome the troubles along the way.

The battleground for the finale to this years’ Winter Series takes place at Homestead Speedway, or as rFactor2 knows it, Palm Springs Speedway. Built between 1993 and 1995 it is most famous for hosting the season finale of NASCAR every year since 2002. However, despite being an oval, it hasn’t as of yet featured a great deal of Indycar races, the Indy Lights series has held races there over the years as did ChampCar in its prime.

The challenge that ‘Palm Springs’ presents for this Sunday is an interesting one, the course that will be used sees almost 2/3 of the oval used as well as the infield section. So setup for this Sunday will be very crucial.

The top 3 standings heading into the race are as follows:

1) Kuba Brzezinski 99pts

2) Jernej Simoncic 90pts

3) Michi Hoyer         79pts

We managed to ask the 3 championship contenders their thoughts on the race as they prepare for this Sunday.

Jernej Simoncic

"I'm taking the last round as purely for fun. Of course part of the reason to do this winter series was do fight for the free licence, and it went wrong, mostly for my own mistakes and partly just for some unfortunate circumstances. Kuba did no mistakes and was there taking away the points round per round, which now lead to the point when under normal racing conditions I can't win the winter series anymore. And since the testing for the new season started already, my worries are elsewhere and I'm coming to the last round with feeling of freedom - I will take my car and drive it around and just enjoy racing. I hope we can finally deliver a thrilling race with wheel to wheel battles with Kuba, and may he disconnect in the last lap smile emoticon sorry I had to"

Michi Hoyer

“After the 2nd round of this years’ winter series has been aborted I lost the chance of challenging Jernej Simoncic in the championship, because I have to admit that I won't have a single chance on track with wheel to wheel action.

Chasing Kuba Brzezinski is even a different story though. That guy just makes no single mistake whatsoever while Jernej is struggling sometimes like he did in Indianapolis.

I hope the last race is just going well for everyone in terms of the 3 championship contenders that the championship won’t be decided by an accident or something similar.

Apart from that looking back on the short winter series I am a bit disappointed of Road America where I did a stupid mistake which ended my race. Apart from that I had a lot of fun and I really could outplay my strengths and Skills especially at Mid-Ohio where I fought back from P22 to P4.

Therefore I just want to secure the 3rd. Place into the Drivers’ Championship and take bronze as a motivation for 2016 main series

See you at Melbourne!”

Kuba Brzezinski

“I'm looking forward to the race, I've been having great battles with Jernej. He got involved in some accidents in the last two races so it was a bit easier but hopefully this time we can have a good race until the last lap.

Hopefully nothing bad is going to happen so that I can safely bring home the championship”
