Round 10 - Britain Race Review
World Championship
Monday, 12 July 2010 19:46

Round 10 of the AutoGP World Championship took place on the famous Silverstone circuit, this time on the new 2010 layout. This new layout sees an increase in overtaking opportunities with the addition of an extra straight.

There were no surprises on the front row with Bruno Marques taking pole just ahead of championship leader Bono Huis. David Greco qualified third and Fredrik Nilsson would start fourth for the third consecutive time. Mathieu Prévot set the fifth fastest time ahead of Lee Morris in sixth.

Off the line, Huis immediately moved to the left side of the track to defend against Greco, but all cars made it through the first corner cleanly. The only change to the top 10 order came from Poniatowski, who passed Greco for seventh. There was no contact made through the tricky Becketts chicane complex, but with a clean run out of Chapel, Huis challenged Marques for the top spot.

Throughout the field plenty of position changes took place, especially in the new sections of the circuit. Florian Bekker was slipping backwards from the top seven and Ronny Hähnel was charging up through the mid field. After successfully passing Prévot, Morris began a battle with Nilsson for fourth, but fell back after making a bold move on the inside of him, allowing Poniatowski to move up into fifth place. Prévot quickly lost out to both Mikkonen and Hähnel, dropping down to ninth position. At the front Marques was holding up Huis for the lead, but at the midfield the battle was just heating up. A fast lapping Morris soon got past Poniatowski and one lap later he overtook Nilsson for fourth. Poniatowski consequently attempted a move on Nilsson and Hähnel jumped on the opportunity, passing two cars at once. Hähnel now had Morris in his sight and made an easy pass outside of Stowe, promoting him 4th, after having started in a disappointing 14th.

Race leader Marques was the first of the front runners to pit, followed by his team-mate Greco on the next lap. Two laps later Huis came in for his pit stop, but overshot hit pit box, costing three valuable seconds. He emerged behind Greco in third position, five seconds behind Marques. Poniatowski managed to leapfrog both Hähnel and Morris through his first stop, but Morris lost his pace in the second stint and soon dropped back into the bottom of the top ten. Puumalainen was now running sixth, ahead of Mikkonen in seventh.

It soon became clear that Huis had a much better pace than both the Twister-Racing cars as he quickly narrowed the gap. Huis' charge came to a halt however once he hit Greco's dirty air. Waiting patiently, Huis made his move when Greco made a mistake out of Chapel, and defended the position as Greco went back for a drift through Stowe. It only took three laps for Huis to catch Marques, and moments later passed the Portuguese into the new Abbey corner on the pit-in lap. During the pit stop Greco, however, managed to leapfrog both of the two.

Further behind Poniatowski was running comfortably in fourth position ahead of Hähnel in fifth, while Mikkonen had moved into sixth ahead of Puumalainen. As Greco was the slowest of the leading trio, it wasn't long before Huis was back on his tail with Marques close behind. Desperate to hold onto the lead, Greco locked up into Brooklands, running wide into the grass, which allowed both Huis and Marques through. In fifth position Hähnel's tires were becoming badly worn due to an early second stop, which firstly allowed Mikkonen past him. Fearing a puncture, Hähnel slowed down on the final laps, which gave Puumalainen the opportunity to pass him on the Hangar straight.

With Marques unable to close the gap in the final stages, Bono Huis took his fourth victory of the 2010 season, increasing his lead in the championship standings up to 26 points. Marques finished in second, minimizing the damage for his championship campaign and remaining on a net second place. Greco finished on the podium for the third time this season and Karol Poniatowski drove a solid race to claim fourth. Mikkonen finished fifth ahead of Puumalainen in sixth. No change in the order took place in the constructors championship. Precision Motorsports is holding the lead in front of Twister-Racing, with the newly badged MAK-Corp Precision Motorsports remaining in third ahead of SB Motorsports in fourth.

The next race will be the German Grand Prix. Tune in at 5:25 pm GMT on July 18th for the MultiBC broadacast!
