The Winter Series season opener at Mid-Ohio wasn't without its fair share of drama.  Jernej Simoncic showed the pace of a World Championship driver by dominating the time sheets in both open practice and qualifying.  With a qualifying time of 1:02.765, Simoncic took Pole position with almost 3 tenths of a second to spare.  Kuba Brzezinski took 2nd place in qualifying, followed by Michi Hoyer.  Rounding out the top 5 would be Pashalis Gergis and Georg Winter.

The race started mostly incident free with minor incidents happening in the back of the field.  Kuba Brzezinski got a better jump on Jernej Simoncic and led the race for the first 2 laps.  Drama then started when a backmarker collided with Brzezinski, taking away his lead and causing moderate damage to his car.  Jernej would then take the lead with some battling with Pashalis Gergis.  Simoncic led for the next 23 laps, earning both points for leading and for leading the most laps.  Both would be crucial by the end of the race.  On lap 25 Simoncic had an error which forced him into the pits.  Kuba Brzezinski would take the lead until the end of the race, sealing his win.

The race featured mutliple battles with some newcomers doing well.  Around lap 30, Fabian Ruth and Pedro Gomes battled over 7th position, with Gomes coming out on top.  David O'Reilly and Cameron Rodger also battled over 9th, with O'Reilly coming out on top.  Later in the race Jernej Simoncic pressured Pashalis Gergis for 2nd place but Gergis kept his cool for the second spot on the podium.

The final results put Simoncic on the top of the points as his Pole position, fastest lap and most lead laps overcame the deficit of being 3rd to take the lead in the 2016 Winter Series.  All the results and standings can be found on GPCOS.
